| Multibeam echosounders (MBES) have become a widely used acoustic remote sensing tool to map and study the seafloor, providing co-located bathymetry and seafloor backscatter. Although the uncertainty associated with MBES-derived bathymetric data has been studied extensively, the question of backscatter uncertainty has been addressed only minimally and hinders the quantitative use of MBES seafloor backscatter. | Gardens are hot spots for urban biodiversity and provide habitats for many plant and animal species, both above- and below-ground. Furthermore, gardens provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including carbon (C) storage and nutrient cycling. Although the soil is the foundation of sustainable gardens providing those ecosystem services, very little is known about the consequences of garden management on soil quality. | Efforts to conserve biodiversity comprise a patchwork of international goals, national-level plans, and local interventions that, overall, are failing. We discuss the potential utility of applying the mitigation hierarchy, widely used during economic development activities, to all negative human impacts on biodiversity. Evaluating all biodiversity losses and gains through the mitigation hierarchy could help prioritize consideration of conservation goals and drive the empirical evaluation of conservation investments through the explicit consideration of counterfactual trends and ecosystem dynamics across scales. | While our knowledge about the roles of microbes and viruses in the ocean has increased tremendously due to recent advances in genomics and metagenomics, research on marine microbial eukaryotes and zooplankton has benefited much less from these new technologies because of their larger genomes, their enormous diversity, and largely unexplored physiologies. | Sharks are a diverse group of mobile predators that forage across varied spatial scales and have the potential to influence food web dynamics. The ecological consequences of recent declines in shark biomass may extend across broader geographic ranges if shark taxa display common behavioural traits. By tracking the original site of photosynthetic fixation of carbon atoms that were ultimately assimilated into muscle tissues of 5,394 sharks from 114 species, we identify globally consistent biogeographic traits in trophic interactions between sharks found in different habitats. | Several models have been proposed to explain how eukaryotic cells control the length of their cilia and flagella. Here, we investigated this process in the protist Trypanosoma brucei, an excellent model system for cells with stable cilia like photoreceptors or spermatozoa. We show that the total amount of intraflagellar transport material (IFT, the machinery responsible for flagellum construction) increases during flagellum elongation, consistent with constant delivery of precursors and the previously reported linear growth. Reducing the IFT frequency by RNAi knockdown of the IFT kinesin motors slows down the elongation rate and results in the assembly of shorter flagella. | ABSTRACT: The Mantiqueira Range region is one of the most important headwaters in southeastern Brazil. In this context, the relationship between pedology and hydrology has been debated and analyzed in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science call hydropedology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hydropedological properties of a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, comparing two land-uses, native forest and pasture. | Resumo: O Vale do Taquari é uma região localizada no centro do Rio Grande do Sul, composta por 36 municípios e com a economia voltada ao agronegócio. Nesta região, como em outras, existem pessoas carentes e muitas sem acesso a uma alimentação digna. Com a finalidade de prover pelo menos uma refeição diária consistente para os que não têm acesso e gerar renda para os agricultores familiares, foi criado, pelo governo federal, em 2003, o Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA). | RESUMO Os opioides são utilizados na medicina veterinária na analgesia dos animais, porém há restrição quanto ao uso desses fármacos em equinos, pois podem desencadear alterações gastrintestinais, mas a administração pela via epidural minimiza os efeitos adversos. Assim, oito equinos hígidos foram utilizados em três grupos experimentais, objetivando-se avaliar a influência no trânsito gastrintestinal da injeção epidural de morfina (0,2mg/kg), tramadol (1,0mg/kg) ou NaCl 0,9%. Para a avaliação do trânsito gastrintestinal, foi administrada a lignina purificada e enriquecida (Lipe®), pela via oral, a qual posteriormente foi analisada nas fezes. | RESUMO As descargas de água doce permanentes em praias arenosas, conhecidas como sangradouros, promovem alterações em diferentes escalas espaciais e temporais sobre as características ambientais, e consequentemente sobre as populações macrobentônicas.
